In Memory Of

Alice Jean Williams Clark, age 72, of White Sulphur Springs, MT

February 4, 1950 – October 6, 2022

Alice Jean Williams Clark, February 4 1950 – October 6 2022.

Alice Jean Williams Clark was the middle child born to Helen (Busch) and George Williams in Billings, Montana on February 4, 1950.  She became her father’s “sweet little Alice blue gown”, a song from the 1919 musical “Irene.”  She grew up tending chickens and the family garden as well as playing with coon hound puppies and Mama Kitty’s babies.  She took piano lessons, children’s tap dance classes and swim lessons, teaching swimming at one point.  She attended Orchard elementary, Garfield Junior High and West High before getting her degree in elementary education from Eastern Montana College.

In the fall of 1972, Alice began her elementary teaching career in Wyola.  In 1974, she accepted a teaching position in White Sulphur Springs, where she shared her knowledge with students until her retirement in June of 1997.  It was in White Sulphur Springs that she met a handsome and dashing game warden named Gene Clark.  They were married February 4, 1976. While both Alice and Gene were working full time, they ran a Smith River shuttle business during the season and hosted hunters from across the U.S. and the state who wanted to hunt using Gene’s expertise.

Alice enjoyed hiking and canoeing but was also talented in handcrafts like macrame and crocheting. Gene retired first so when Alice retired they began snowbirding to Mulege, Baja California Sur, where they established a group of American, Canadian and Mexican friends and enjoyed various outings exploring southern Mexico.

Alice was diagnosed with incipient dementia in late 2014 and with her usual determination fought hard to maintain her lifestyle.  Unfortunately, after COVID isolation her situation deteriorated severely.  The day after being admitted to a memory care unit, she fell and broke a hip; she did not recover from that fall.  She died in hospice on October 6, 2022. There will be no service, per Alice’s wishes, but the family would like to invite friends and family to lift a glass with us at a no host social at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 16 at the Lane in White Sulphur Springs.

The family would also like to thank those friends and neighbors who kept an eye on Alice (and Gene) over the past few years as well as the staff at Edgewood and Enhabit hospice in Helena.

Memorials may be made to the organization of your choice in her name.
