Berty Lou Pennell McCracken Fischer passed away quietly at Broadwater Health Center on Thursday afternoon, November 5, 2015 surrounded by loving staff and three cousins.
Berty was born eight minutes after her twin sister, Betty on June 27, 1931 in Helena to Hazel Mae Harris Pennell. Their early years were spent in Radersburg. On Valentine’s Day 1940, Charles Hough became their loving father. They lived in Radersburg and Butte and then moved to Moses Lake, Washington.
Berty married Dave McCracken on August 28, 1949. They were joined by two sons, Charles Earnest in 1950 and Mark Edwin in 1951. While raising the boys, she babysat other children and cooked at the school lunch program in Moses Lake. After the boys were grown, Berty and Dave moved back to Radersburg, Dave was killed in a construction accident in 1975.
In 1978, Berty married Ben Fischer and moved to Townsend. They enjoyed many years of travel and visiting relatives in other states until his death on November 2, 2001.
Berty loved her morning newspaper, daily crossword, solitaire, cribbage and other card games.
Berty was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Dave and Ben; Daughter –in-law Cathy. She is survived by her; sons, Charles (Melissa) and Mark (Becky); grandchildren Kay, Laura, David, Jennifer and Mary Ann McCracken; sister Betty Walker and numerous McCracken, Walker, Harris and Fischer relatives.
Thanks go out to all the staff at Broadwater Health Center for all the love and care you gave Berty over the last two years. She always said you treated her so well, “But I’m not spoiled…Am I?”
A graveside service is scheduled on Friday, November 13th at 12:00 p.m. at the Radersburg Cemetery. A memorial service and luncheon reception will immediately follow at the Radersburg Schoolhouse. Memorials are suggested to the Radersburg Historical Preservation, P.O. Box 96, Toston, MT 59643. I never met Charlie but met Mark a couple of times when I was younger my family sends
our thoughts and condolences to both of you and your families. One Memory I remember the most about Berty was when my sister and I were young her and my Grandpa(Ben) would come into Helena to visit my parents and us she always carried a pack of gum in her purse would always give us a piece before they left to head home. I’m glad to have known
her she cared for so many I also enjoy the memories of knowing her mother Hazel also.
