David Francis Tarmina, 78, passed away July 11th 2016 of natural causes at his home in Townsend, MT.
David was born May 3rd, 1938 to Mary and Francis Tarmina in Monaca, PA and was the oldest of three children. As a child, he enjoyed boy scouts and baseball. He worked at his Dad’s grocery store, shared a paper route with his younger brother and served as an altar boy. The family moved to San Jose, CA in 1951. He graduated with honors from Bellarmine College Preparatory School in 1956. A serious illness as a teenager inspired David to pursue a career in medicine. He attended Santa Clara University and went on to graduate from St. Louis University Medical School in 1963. He completed a residency at University of Minnesota Hospital in Internal Medicine. He fulfilled his military duty by serving at the NIH Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, MT. There he worked on important infectious disease research involving Hantavirus and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. He continued his career in medicine as a radiologist and served in several communities in the Idaho, Montana and Wyoming area including work for the Indian Health Service. After caring for veterans at the VA Medical Center in Helena, MT he retired to Townsend in 2000.
He was an avid hunter, and particularly enjoyed duck hunting. He was a member of the Broadwater Rod and Gun Club where he distinguished himself as an excellent marksman in trap shooting competitions.
He earned a commercial pilot license and flew recreationally for many years. He maintained a membership in the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association until his death. He was also a car enthusiast and enjoyed woodworking.
David is predeceased by father, Francis Thomas Tarmina. He is survived by two children Paul Tarmina (Kathleen), Park City, UT and Christine Tarmina D’Angelo (Rick), Boston, MA and four grandchildren Olivia, Jack, Emily and Sarah. In addition, he is survived by mother Mary Holy Tarmina, San Jose, CA, brother, Dennis E. Tarmina, Pacific Grove, CA and sister, Francine Tarmina O’Daniel (Chuck), Monterey, CA. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a funeral service to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13th at the Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 212 Broadway, Townsend, MT. Burial will follow the service at the Deep Creek Cemetery. A reception will follow the service at the funeral home.
