Dennis H. Scoffield passed away on October 9, 2015 at home surrounded by family.
Dennis was born on January 23, 1935, in Tremonton, Utah. He was the first born son of Chester Flint and Ethel Harris Scoffield. Chet and Ethel and sons, Dennis, Ward and Michael moved to Broadwater County in 1949 and Dennis entered school at Broadwater County High School that fall. He played football and was considered an outstanding basketball player. He graduated in 1953.
Dennis married Trenna Lee Hollaway on June 10, 1952 and they made their first home on South Pine Street in the Hollaway three apartment house, owned by Trenna’s grandfather, Floyd L. Hollaway. In 1954 the young couple and their baby son Scott moved to Bozeman, where Dennis was employed by the State Highway Department. In 1956 they moved back to Townsend and Dennis became a partner farming with his father-in-law, Donald L. Hollaway. In 1957 they built their home on Litening Barn Lane. Dennis later bought out his father-in-law’s interest in their farming venture and added other acreage.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Michael L. Scoffield. He is survived by his wife, Trenna, four children; R. Scott (Dawn) of Townsend, Bradley Don of Yuma AZ, Lindsey Dennis of Franklin TN and Marta Marie (Tim) Kindt of Mesa AZ, brothers; Ward (Sherry) and Michael C. Scoffield of Townsend, sister-in-law Deena (Mike) Pech and his grandchildren, Autumn (Nate) McClellan, Chanda (Chris) Blume, Jennifer (Eric) Wyatt, Shannon (Jake) Cartwright, David Cameron, Tia (Brandon) Hatch and Sam Scoffield, 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dennis won the Deer Shoot and his father Chester won the largest fish contest at the Toston Fish Derby in the fall of 1953 the day his first son, Scott, was born. Dennis’s passions included fishing with friends and family, hunting the elusive elk and game birds throughout the entire valley of Broadwater County, bowling with the Hayshakers Team at the Lucky Lanes Bowling Alley. He was a champion Crib Player being able to count his opponents hand before the game was over, thus annoying his opponents greatly. He was an excellent marksman and loved to shoot trap and was always shooting his competitors pigeons before shooting his own. One of his favorite past times was to entertain at the family cabin, Rillway, up Deep Creek Canyon. He would serve barbecued chicken, cabin potatoes and corn on the cob. He was an excellent grill master, grilling for many LDS Steak Fries.

Deena Pech says
When I was young, I listed Dennis’s traits of ambition and hard-working as one of the three things I wanted in my future husband. He and my sis gave me three super nephews and one super niece. Scott arrived when I was only 8 years old and because they were in and out of our house a lot, they were like my little brothers and sister. As much as the years find us scattered throughout the U.S. with different experiences behind us, it’s wonderful to think that we are all still very family connected. It’s important and I’m grateful. His folks and my folks would be glad and grateful.
Rebecca Mitchell says
Sorry that we can’t be there as we’re in Hardin for a couple of days. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
James Poole says
Dear Trenna and family,
All my best wishes to you and the entire family. The quality I remember best about Dennis was his sense of humor. Like Deena expressed, its the family connections that count despite the geography. I am happy to be but a thin thread to yours.
Gail and Lorrie Vennes says
Trenna and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. May your memories bring you peace now and in the future.
Denise Moudree says
Trenna and All, I’m glad you were in Townsend at this time, surrounded by your many friends, family and under the Big Sky. May you find comfort there, close to the land you worked for so many years and embraced by the community you were both so involved with. I’m thinking of you all as you grieve Dennis’ passing and find comfort in your happy memories.
