2016-03-31 Doreen Sautter
On October 16th, 1929, Doreen Margaret McIntosh was born in the rural farming community of Climax, Saskatchewan, Canada to Clifford James McIntosh and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Ann Merrit-McIntosh. Growing up, Doreen enjoyed skating, curling, school, broom ball, playing cards and fox and geese. She would top it off with dancing at Glenn’s Border Bar in Turner, Mt. with friends. Summer time brought softball, family trips to Banff and Calgary, Alberta, shooting BB guns, snaring gophers and riding horses at Pricilla and Freddy Read’s ranch. Doreen often celebrated at home with sister, Audrey, playing cards with those who were alone, while listening to her Dad play the violin and Aunt Grace on the piano.
1948 brought high school graduation, a short summer at home and then enrolling in the Moose Jaw Nursing School, where she excelled and graduated in 1951 as a “Registered Nurse “. Months later she began her first nursing job at the Climax Hospital. In 1952, Doreen came to the Unites States on a work visa to settle in for a 31 year nursing career at Broadwater Hospital. There she often faced delivering babies and such in the absence of the local doctor. “Let the Caring and Giving Begin!”
In short order, 1952, with the help of Tom Kieckbusch and Lucy Lemon, Red met Jack Sautter. A short year later (Oct. 1st, 1953) the fiery redhead married Jack and off to “The Hollywood Palladium” to dance and enjoy the era’s big band music. The years that followed would bring four children: Gregg (1954), Susan (1956), Jackie (1959) and John (1961). Doreen’s family would now experience the humble and broad outpouring of “Caring and Giving “.
1957 was a very proud year for Doreen, as she became a naturalized citizen of the United States at the age of 28.
Doreen’s interests were vibrant and many: Horse racing, Rodeo, RVing, Bridge club, pottery and crafts, baseball & a more than an occasional comment to the umpires, gardening, water painting, dried flower pictures and cards, collecting crystal & shells and of course canning and baking. Doreen enjoyed time with family skiing at Grassy Mountain and camping up Sulphur Bar (where she became proficient at shooting a 357 at a rubber thong, to protect the kids from bears when Jack left to run the movie theatre).
Doreen’s kind heart always reached out to friends and community even while working the 3-11shift at the Broadwater Hospital. Doreen’s commitment to community was heartfelt: Baked goods, rest home visits, cancer turbans, main street flowers and trees, to name a few, all with the help of her many friends. So many and too much time passed to name them all (Doreen thanks you!)
Her favorite inspirational literature was the “Bible”. Her favorite music was “Gospel”, but don’t leave out “Jailhouse Rock “by Elvis Presley. Her favorite holiday was Easter and favorite book was “Gone with the Wind “. Her favorite flower was a “Rose“. Favorite athletes were “Mike Piazza and Orel Hershiser“. Doreen’s Dream Job was to be a “Captain in the Army Nurse Corp “.
Throughout Doreen’s life, these were some of the Community Services she was involved in: Garden Club, Canton Women’s Club and the Methodist Women’s Club. Some of the honors Doreen received were: Grand Marshall of the Broadwater Rodeo, Fair and Parade, Thirty Years of Service Award and Past President of the “Canton Women’s Club” and from 1992 – 1994 and 1996 – 1998 she was President of the Townsend Garden Club. .
Doreen was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Sautter; her aunt, Grace Johnson, Rose and John Bluth, Mable Bannister; uncle, Kenneth McIntosh, Richard Merrit; brother-in-law, Lorne Thorlakson and her nephew, Lyn Berringer.
She is survived by her sons, Gregg (Karen) Sautter and John Sautter; daughters, Susan (Gary) Ritter and Jackie Ruple; grandchildren, Jade, Kyla, Ashlyn, Carson, Jeffrey, Danielle and Drew Savage, Casey and Kelly; great grandchildren, Ellie and Riley; her sister, Audrey Thorlakson-Powers; brother-in-law, Howard Powers; nephew, Terry (Sylvia) Thorlakson; nieces, Bonnie (Lyn) Berringer and Lorna (Dee Dee) Reimer and Earl Landis.

I am very sorry for the loss of your dear loved one. No one wants to happen this as God has promised to, one day soon, eliminate death forever, along with all sickness, pain, and sorrow. (Rev.21:4) He has also promised to reunite us with our loved ones on a restored paradise earth. The Bible says he yearns to do this. (John 5:28,29; Job 14:14,15) I hope these scriptures will bring comfort to each of you as we will meet Doreen again soon.

Gregg, Susan, Jackie, John and families, My deepest sympathy to you all. Your Mother was like no other. Special in many ways. Many laughs were shared with both of your parents. So many memories come to mind, but of course the best with Doreen winning at the “ponies”. She had a knack for that one. She will be missed by many who have been touched by her. I wish I was there with you during this time, but know that my heart is there and I’m certainly there in spirit. Hugs to you all.

I have many memory’s of my sister Doreen ,her and Jack came to Canada for all our wedding and funeral and family gatherings .Jack singing at them all. Doreen was always Mrs. clean ,she once washed Jacks typewriter just before tax time ,water shot out every where. She also washed a large container of wheat , befor it dried she procceeded to put down the garbage disposal , she added a lot of water , the more she added the more the wheat grow , it was a mess ,came up the shower and every tap in the house , I happened to be there and we did manage to get it under control , and laughed about it. We were close in age so we shared friends , We did do a lot of skating and curling dancing and games. Too many memory’s to list . My family will all miss Aunt Red . Will always love the kids and grand kids .

Gregg, Susan, Jackie, John and families,
Our heartfelt sympathies go to all of you in this sad time. We have been really shocked by the passing of each of your parents. They have been friends since we moved to Townsend and crossed paths in the school and pool many times. We shared many warm memories! Having them both use an urn that I made goes right to my heart. Jack and I talked about it often! May God’s plan give peace to us all!

Greg, Karen, and Girls and all the family. I send my heartfelt condolences to all. Such a great lady and friend to many. A tireless nurse, mother and town mother.
I am so happy she got to see Mike Piazza voted into the HOF!!!! And so blessed that I was able to chat with her by phone this winter…she meant a lot to me. Always fun it was to visit with her in later years to get the report on “Hubby’s” day at the ponies’ track at the Missoula fair. Enjoy your wonderful memories and celebrate the great friendship and nurturing you received from the lady who hailed from across the border. Love to all. Art.

My thoughts and my prayers go out to all of you. It’s hard to type this with tear welling in my eyes. She was definitely one in a million—maybe two million. How lucky our family was when my cousin Jack had the smarts to ask “the redhead” to marry him. Please know that it has been a joy to have known Doreen Hope Heaven is ready for a little noise because you know she will be cheering for all baseball teams. So so happy I got to see both at our reunion last summer. Love to all

To the entire Sautter family and friends, my condolences go out to each and everyone of you. My memories or Jack and Doreen are priceless. Whether it was Doreen taking care of my self or my family at the hospital, or learning how to play little league baseball with Jack, they both were very caring, giving people who will be greatly missed. Thank you all for the great memories with not only with Jack and Doreen, but your entire family. God bless Jack and Doreen and may they rest in peace.

Greg, Susan, Jackie and John, I was saddened by the loss of your beautiful mother. She was one of those people who made a lasting impression on everyone she met and all who knew her were better for having known her. What an amazing sense of human she had and a laugh was so inviting. She never saw a stranger and welcomed everyone with open arms. I will miss seeing her smiling face and warm greetings. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you and all of the Sautter family. God’s blessing to you all.
