I only knew Ed a short time at BHC. Heven always had a smile and liked to do jig saw puzzles. He enjoyed reading the paper until recently when is eye sight was falling. As a veteran he enjoyed the Veteran’s Day program.

Thanks Ed Smith for being part of my family for fifteen years. You gave me new things to look at in Montana. You have shared much of your life with my family. It was an honor to receive your flag. Thank you again. I will never forgwt you. At least your coffee dont have to be scalding hot anymore.

I met Ed on a logging job when I was a young forester working for Champion International in Lincoln. As I recall, we set up a logging unit on Champion-owned land right in town for him. I moved over to Livingston in 86 and had the opportunity to work with Ed and George for a while, chasing patches of wood in the Crazies on what was then the Galt Ranch. Ed was always kind and soft spoken to me. He always did a good job with bare bones equipment and lived in the woods in his camper until spring breakup most years. They were the days when all the logging was done by hand. Now days, not many loggers on jobs know how to fell trees with chain saws. That’s something that other folks in the family (like George Smith and Ted Lawrence) can relate to, also. God Bless you, Ed. You will always be a man that I looked up to with respect when I was a young forester. Put in a good word for those of us with “sawdust in our veins”.
