Eugene Charles “Gene” Cook, long time Townsend resident, went to be with our Lord on December 7, 2012. Gene was born August 14, 1933 in Logan, Montana, to Grant and Gladys (Burrell) Cook. He moved to Townsend at an early age attending school and graduating from Broadwater County High School in 1951.
Following high school, he enlisted in the US Navy serving in Guam during the Korean War. Upon his return to the States, Gene joined the National Guard in Helena. He married Vesta Jean Wall on December 6, 1958. Together they raised five children; Steve (Nancy), of Elko, Nevada; Doug (Janice), of Leawood, Kansas; Kevin (Tricia), of Bozeman, Montana; Brian (Terry), of Abilene, Kansas; and Candace (Darrick) Brown, of Round Mountain, Nevada.
During his working life, Gene spent most of his time in the sawmill business, owning and operating various mills before going to work at the local mill from which he retired in 1995. After retirement, he built his dream wood shop in his back yard and spent many enjoyable hours there. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to visit his many grandkids, great grandkids, and friends. Gene especially enjoyed prospecting and hunting in the mountains he loved so much and attending Grizzly football games.
He cared for “Vet”, his beloved wife of 43 years, during her long illness until she passed away in 2000. In 2010, Gene joined hearts with his “Special Angel”, Margaret Clark, with whom he spent the last two years of his life, proving to us that it’s never too late to fall in love.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and his sister Elaine. He is survived by Margaret Clark; his brother Ralph (Nelda) of Helena; his sons and daughter; 16 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; his nephew, Mike Mercer; and numerous friends and extended family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 11, from 12-6pm, with the family greeting from 1-3pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 12, at 1 pm at the Trailhead Christian Fellowship Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Deep Creek Cemetery immediately followed by a reception at the American Legion. Memorials are suggested to the Deep Creek Cemetery or to the charity of choice.
