Eugene Grant Clark Jr. was the oldest child born to Jean (Kinsey) and Sheriff Eugene Grant Clark of Ryegate, Montana on February 5, 1939. “Gene followed his father’s footsteps into law enforcement and became a Fish and Game Warden for the state of Montana. He was one of the Founding Fathers of the Montana Game Wardens’ Association.”
He grew up in the small community of Ryegate, Montana and graduated from Ryegate Public School in 1957. He attended Montana State University from 1957-1959 in Fish and Wildlife Management, and then volunteered for the draft and joined the Army for two years.
In 1963, Gene found his niche with the Montana State Game Wardens. He was stationed in several districts starting his career in Missoula, moving to Glasgow, then onto Dillon and Bozeman before he found his forever home in White Sulphur Springs, Mt as the Game Warden from 1965 to 1989, when he retired. After he moved to White Sulphur Spring, he met a schoolteacher named Alice Williams. They were married February 4, 1976. Alice preceded him in death October 6, 2022. Gene and Alice befriended and helped anyone who came into their lives.
After his retirement, Gene outfitted for out-of-state friends and started the Smith River shuttle business, Think Wild Enterprises, that he and Alice ran for over 20 years. Many folks around WSS were familiar with Gene’s mini-sized Think Wild calendars. Gene and Alice were fond of snow birding to Mulege, Baja California Sur, where they established a group of American, Canadian, and Mexican friends and enjoyed various outings exploring southern Mexico. His favorite pastime was connecting with people anywhere he traveled. He will always be remembered as a steward of nature, wildlife, and people.
Gene is preceded in death by parents Eugene and Jean Clark; sister Sherry Ann Clark; wife of 46 years Alice Clark; sons Blair Clark, Wade Clark, Shawn Clark; step-daughter Debbie Huffield from a previous marriage. He is survived by brothers Dan Clark, Gordon Clark, and Martin (Marty) Clark; daughter Bainbridge (Cathy) Scott; grandson Sam Sack.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life and a Memorial planned for Saturday, June 17th, at 1 pm at the White Sulphur Springs Senior Center in White Sulphur Springs, MT. Any memorials can be made to the Game Wardens’ Association or charity of choice in Gene or Gene and Alice’s name.
