George Thomas Kirkwood, 78, passed in peace at his home on September 16th, 2018. George was born to Velma Jacqueline Straugh and Donald George Kirkwood in Townsend, MT on December 10th, 1939. George leaves sisters Donna and Sally, and his grandson Robert. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert (Bob) Kirkwood, and by his son, Donald Stuart Kirkwood.
He joined the United States Navy in January of 1958; serving a total of more than 22 years and culminating with the rank of Fire Control Technician; Senior Chief Petty Officer (FTCS). His career took him all over the country, and his service record was impeccable. George received two bachelor’s degrees; his first from the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology with a degree in Occupation Safety and Health. He received his second bachelor’s in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology from Montana State University in 1986.
After a career of travelling, George settled in White Sulphur Springs in 2002. He was active in the community; supporting the local gun club, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter, and participating in the city council. Survived by his siblings, grandson, cousins, and nieces and nephews, George will be missed and remembered fondly as a smart, hardworking, and caring member of the White Sulphur Springs Community, and as a proud veteran of the United States Navy.
Graveside services with military honors will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 24th at the Mayn Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs. A coffee hour will follow the graveside service at the senior center.
