James Walter Young
1946 – 2018
James (Jim) Walter Young, age 71, died June 6, 2018, at Mountain View Medical Center in White Sulphur Springs, Montana, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on November 25, 1946, in Ashland, Wisconsin, to James Edwin Young and Virginia (Ramsey) Staley. He was the first of three children born to the couple who later divorced. They lived in Park Falls, Wisconsin, and at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois, for several years before moving to White Sulphur Springs in 1958.
Jim married Linda Johnson on July 20, 1964. They made their home in White Sulphur Springs where they raised their five children and spent the rest of their years together. Jim was a great father and worked hard to provide for his family. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.
He was a hard-working cowboy who worked at several ranches in the area, including Riverside Ranch for 25 years and Castle Mountain Ranch, which he retired from in 2010. He loved working with cattle, riding, breaking horses, and riding bareback in his early years. He enjoyed rodeos and volunteered to run the gate at the Meagher County Rodeo for many years.
He loved to hunt, seldomly missing a season. He also enjoyed trapping and was a regular attendee of trapper conventions in Lewistown. He loved socializing with friends and family, and could spend hours conversing about history, people, places, hunting, his work and family. He was kind, loving and always had a joke to share, keeping his sense of humor until his very last day.
Jim is survived by his wife Linda and five children: son James Todd Young (Kjerstie), daughter Kimberly Clayton (AJ), daughter Pamela Young, daughter Amy Ripple (Lonnie), and son Benjamin Young (Marissa). Grandchildren: Geoffery Tatro, James Albert Young, Amanda Casiano, Laci Novark, Julie Vinton, Kolter Clayton, Austin Clayton, Kayli Masolo, Kara Masolo, Whitni Masolo, Mike Ripple, Zach Ripple, Clay Ripple, Parker Ripple, Tayler Ripple, Evan Ripple, Jenna Young, Josh Young, Maci Young and Coleman Young. As well as many great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Katherine Nickens and Sherry (Young) Juntunen, and brother Mike Young.
He was proceded in death by his mother and father; grandsons Phoenix Carlson and Toby J. Clayton; and a very special childhood cousin, Butchie Wardensky, who Jim dearly loved and was a great influence on his life.
