John Blumer, proprietor of the Mint Bar in White Sulphur Springs, died unexpectedly at home on August 16, 2016. John is survived by his wife, Brenda Blumer; his sisters, Jean Walker and Lona Ammons; his daughters, Malinda Tange and Becky Blumer; their spouses, Jeff Tange and Kate Molony; his stepsons John, Joey and Cody Goff. His granddaughter and her husband, Ashley and Anthony Almanza and his 8 step grandchildren- Ellie, Avery, Charli, Annie, Gavin, Miley, Caleb and Joey Jr.
John was born in Billings on July 8, 1945 to David Blumer and Ruth Oliver. He grew up in Harlowton and served with the U.S. Army. After his service, he earned a master’s degree from the Montana School of Mines, and worked as a geologist while initially raising his family in Idaho and Colorado. John moved the family to White Sulphur Springs in 1985 when he purchased the Mint Bar, serving at times on the board of the Montana Tavern Association. He married Brenda Blumer in 2007.
Anyone who entered the Mint Bar got a taste of John’s personality: intelligent, sarcastic, honest, and hilarious. John loved geology, especially the Castle and Crazy Mountains, as well as telling tall tales, spending time with family, and laughing at the two small chihuahuas that he and Brenda had recently adopted. John helped family and friends alike in times of need, usually behind the scenes. He will be remembered for his lack of patience with foolishness of any kind, the twinkle in his eye, his kind heart, and his knack for telling it like he saw it. Cantankerous as he could sometimes be, he will be deeply missed by those who knew him well.
A celebration of John Blumer’s life occurred at the Mint Bar on Saturday, August 20, 2016 and he rests now in the Castle Mountains.

I knew John back in the early days of WMC and afterwards as proprietor of The Mint. He and Susie were good friends to us back then. I’m sorry for his loss to his family and friends. My best to you all.

I have known John for many years and was so sad to hear of his passing. I worked for John at the deli in WSS, he was one of the funniest and kindest bosses one could have! I am sorry for his familys loss and to all his friends who loved him from the Mint, he will be missed!

John was my first boss in corporate life when I worked as a coal geologist for Mobil. He was one of the best people I ever worked for.
