Leslie Herbert Sibley Jr passed peacefully in his sleep on Monday, April 3, 2017 in White Sulphur Springs, Montana.
Les was born December 2, 1939, the 4th child of Leslie Herbert Sibley Sr. and Claire Chambers Sibley. He attended schools in White Sulphur Springs, Martinsdale, Checkerboard and Lewistown.
After graduating from High School, Les enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He served both stateside and overseas. After being honorably discharged he attended the University of Montana in Missoula. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration from the University of Beverly Hills. Upon returning to Montana, Les was employed by HRDC District #9 Earth Science and Sociology by the MSU System, Wells Fargo and Argus Security. He worked in the Lewis & Clark, Custer and Gallatin National Forests. He was a lifelong member of VFW Post #2154 in Livingston, Montana. Les also served diligently as a member of the Jaycees Organization.
Les moved to the San Francisco South Bay Area after his father’s passing in 1978. He was employed by the City of Mountain View, Department of Public Safety, Sunnyvale and Lockheed Corporation. He worked in Law Enforcement and Security for these agencies. He later returned home to Montana. He lived in Helena for the past 20 years where he developed many close relationships with his neighbors, friends and family.
Les was always easy to talk to with his congenial and engaging personality. He could make people laugh at the numerous stories that he held close to his heart. Anyone that had the pleasure of knowing him knew what a great person he was. Les was a member of the Last Chance Chapel in Helena and loved his associations with his church community.
Les enjoyed hunting, camping, hiking, backpacking and all that the great outdoors had to offer. He was also very fond of his Boston Terrier, Roxie Claire.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Theodora (Teddy) Mergenthaler, Earline (Pete) Nelson, Marion Lucas and nephews Bernie Lucas and Ken Mergenthaler. Survivors include three brothers-in-law, Lloyd Mergenthaler, Kenny Nelson, Chuck Lucas and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Mountainview Medical Center for the wonderful care given to Les. He was happy to be home in White Sulphur Springs!

So sad to hear Les has passed. He was a very dear friend to me and others who live in The Redidences on Ptarmigan Lane in Helena. We have missed him since he moved into nursing homes to have 24 hour care..Everyone loved visiting with him and his little dog, Roxie! He was very much a gentleman and very thoughtful .. my deepest sympathy to his family for the loss of “Uncle” as he was fondly called.

The sisters and brother Theodore, Earline, Marion, and Leslie rest together in peace now. For that, I am thankful but what I am really thankful for is that they were my family and that I loved them and they loved me. That makes me a fortunate man indeed. I was lucky enough to spend time with my Uncle Sonny last Winter and we had a great visit. Uncle Sonny was always good to me and I’ll miss the time we spent together but I will miss more, the time we didn’t get to spend together. The blessing is that when I meet with Uncle Sonny again, the time together will not end. God bless Uncle Sonny and his sisters Teddy, Marion, and Earline, my Mom. May you all rest in peace.

To the family and friends of Les. We are so very sorry for your loss. My husband and I met Les years ago at Last Chance Chapel. He was such a kind-hearted, loving person. We enjoyed talking with him any time we ran into him. He had such a contagious personality and always so happy to talk with everyone. He was just one of those people who loved the Lord with all his heart and it showed. You couldn’t help but feel better about everything after talking to Les. May God bring you His comfort and peace during this time. Our prayers are with you. Kim & Dave
