Louise Flynn passed away peacefully on September 29, 2017 in the loving presence of her family. Born July 15, 1917 to Claude and Etta Marie (Lippert) Flynn, Mary Louise Flynn joined brothers George, Frank and Bill at the family farm on Poverty Flats near Toston, Montana. Two other siblings, Claire and Esther, died in childhood. Louise graduated from Broadwater County High School in 1935 and first worked as a beautician before embarking on a 30-year career as a tax examiner with the Internal Revenue Service.
Although Louise never married or had children of her own, she doted on her nephews Jim, Bob, Billy (dec.), Ted (dec.), John (dec.), Joel (dec.) Gary, Kelly, Kevin, Bryan and Steven (dec.) Flynn and on her nieces Ruth Flynn (dec.), Claudia Evans, Shirley Swanson, Loralee Wilkey, and Teresa Artz.
Louise was a gifted athlete in her own right and loved watching her nephews and then grand nephews and nieces playing high school and college sports. She faithfully followed Townsend Bulldog basketball and volleyball for more than 50 years.
Louise led an adventurous life and loved to participate in many activities including fishing, golfing (into her 90s), and bowling at which she was quite accomplished. She loved to travel and occasionally embarked on gambling tours with close friend Lavina Rains. Louise enjoyed schooling her family and friends in the finer points of pinochle and bridge. She mastered many crafts including cross-stitch, stained glass, woodworking, and knitting. Louise made a treasured heirloom for every niece, nephew, grand niece and nephew, and great grand niece and nephew. One year she even knitted hats for the entire Bulldog volleyball team. In recent years Louise enjoyed reading and working the daily crossword and Sudoku, living independently in her own home to the age of 99.
Family was very important to Louise as evidenced by her vast genealogy research, loving care of her mother for many years, and participation in frequent family gatherings. Louise achieved her goal of celebrating her 100th birthday this past July, at which every line of her brothers and her nieces and nephews was represented.
Louise experienced the profound sadness of outliving her immediate family, five nephews, one niece and many close friends. She especially missed the companionship of her sisters-in-law Lorena, Loilla and Rose. Louise loved the members of her Pinochle and Bridge Clubs, Tuesday Ladies Golf League, and her special friend, Alice McGaw. She was deeply grateful to nephew Kevin who faithfully visited and kept Louise engaged in life.
We will honor Louise at a memorial service on Friday, October 6, at 2 p.m. at the Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home in Townsend immediately followed by interment of her cremains in the Deep Creek Cemetery. An informal potluck reception will follow, hosted by Warren and Becky Flynn at “Ted’s house”, 673 Flynn Lane. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Old Baldy Recreation Association Tree Fund, P.O. Box 131, Townsend, MT 59644 or to the Broadwater County Museum, P.O. Box 614, Townsend, MT 59644.

Shirley, Renee and a Gary, My thoughts and prayers are with you. Your Aunt Louise was such a special, special lady and I’m so happy I got to meet her. Through all your stories about her, I came to admire the full and active life she lived and the blessing she was to so many. What a great example she was of how important it is to make each day count. Love you all.

It was a pleasure to have known Louise although for just a short time at BHC. I can’t say enough about her nephew Kevin who would visit with her and do crossword puzzles with her. It was great to be able to be there for her 100th Birthday party and to see all her family and friends. She is missed.
