Marian Rose (Short) Schendel, 86, of White Sulphur Springs, MT, passed away at Mountain View Medical Center on the evening of February 20, 2025, of natural causes while surrounded by loved ones.
Marian was born on September 26, 1938, to William and Elsie Short in White Sulphur Springs, MT. She was the second and final child of the couple and had fond (and somewhat unruly) memories of growing up on the Lucas Ranch in Ringling, where she attended Tip Top School as a child. She graduated from White Sulphur Springs High School, after which she travelled to Yellowstone National Park to work as a waitress at Fishing Bridge for the summer tourist season.
Upon her return to WSS, Marian married Lloyd Schendel on March 11, 1957, and went on to fill their lives with 6 children. Her kids liked to remind her that she had a child in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. She lived her entire life in Meagher County. Her profession would probably best be described as a wife, mother, and homemaker, but she worked many odd jobs throughout the years including cake decorating, news paper delivery, cleaning the local show hall, and serving at the senior center. Most notably, she provided loving childcare for a multitude of family members and local children throughout the years.
Marian belonged to several local clubs throughout her lifetime. She was a member of the ODO Club, the Ringling Women’s Club, the Meagher County Senior Center, and a long-term member of the local quilting club. Marian enjoyed a variety of hobbies throughout her life, including gardening, sewing, quilting, reading, and crochet. She spent an abundance of spring and summer hours gardening and I’m sure many remember the beauty of her yard and flower beds. Marian was known by many loving names throughout her life: Mom, Grandma, Oma, Mario Grandma, and, most recently, “Old Grandma” by her great granchildren as she chased them around the house and gave them fun rides on her walker. Her love and laughter will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
Marian was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Lloyd, parents, Bill and Elsie Short, sister, Dorothy Lucas, nephew, Mike Lucas, and great-grandson, Max Wilson.
Marian is survived by her six children: Terry (Bruce) Bieber, Joyce (Mike) Wofford, Maureen (Rod) Brewer, Steven Schendel, Honey (Jon) Ring, and Brittany (Leon) Fisher. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family and friends.
Burial services and coffee hour will be planned for this summer.
Special thanks to Deputy Cody Wilson, Meagher County Ambulance crew, Dr. Whitmore, and staff at the Mountain View Medical Center.
Memorials may be directed to Meagher County Senior Center or a local charity of your choice.

Carol Dullum says
Aunt Marian was a special lady who wouldn’t hesitate to hold a conversation with you. I remember in my childhood how my family visited Lloyd, Marian and family. When we weren’t visiting my parents would be calling to see how everyone was doing. Aunt Marion will be missed. I think she’s enjoying Heaven, where she is back with Lloyd and all the family gone before her.

My sympathy. I have wonderful memories of Marion as well as Lloyd. My heart goes out to the entire family.
