Marion Lucas Obituary
Marion Viola Sibley Lucas of Ringling passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on January 14, 2016 in Bozeman, MT. Born April 18, 1936 to Leslie and Claire Sibley in White Sulphur Springs, Marion spent her childhood at the Spring Creek Ranger station and attended school in Martinsdale, Checkerboard and White Sulphur Springs, MT. In 1954 she married her high school sweetheart, Charles (Chuck) Lucas; together they raised three children, Bernie, Debbie, and Patti, on the family ranch in Ringling.
Marion loved the ranch life — feeding the crew and keeping things organized — and many friends and neighbors will recall her special love for her small band of sheep that caused some good competition for space in the barn when Marion’s lambing overlapped with Chuck’s calving. There was always a place at the table for salesmen, friends or strangers that showed up at the door and Marion was always quick to put a pot of coffee on and share some of her baked goods.
Her generosity was fueled by the faith she found in her Catholic life through St. Bartholomew’s Church both socially and spiritually. She and Chuck enjoyed the camaraderie of the parish and it became like an extended family for them. Marion stayed actively involved until her health no longer allowed her to do so.
Marion was actively involved in the Ringling Women’s Club, Meagher County Cattlewomen, Mayn Cemetery Board, Meagher County Historical Society and volunteering at the Castle Museum. She spent countless hours planning reunions such as the Meagher County All Class Reunion, Ringling School, Tip Top School, Lucas/Kiff Family Reunions, and Chamber/Sibley Reunions. Her goal was to make sure that there was food and fun for everyone.
But, Marion’s great passion was for her family and she found joy in collecting and passing on Lucas and Sibley family history. In the many crafts she made as gifts (afghans, etchings, and stained glass) for grandchildren and the children and grandchildren of friends and neighbors, Marion has passed on her own bit of history that will live on in the lives of others. She shared a great love with her husband, Chuck, they traveled everywhere together and truly enjoyed one another’s company.
Marion is survived by her husband of 62 years, Chuck; daughters Patti (Scott) Wilson and Debbie (Mike) Marion of White Sulphur Springs; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a brother, Leslie Sibley of Helena; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marion was proceeded in death by her parents, Leslie and Claire Sibley; a son, Bernie Lucas; and sisters Teddy Mergenthaler and Earline Pete Nelson.

We are so sorry to hear of Marion’s passing. Marion was one of my oldest friends having gone through grade school and graduating high school with her and Chuck. Eva can also recount the many pleasant weekends spent with the Sibley girls on Spring Creek and their life long friendship. We are more than sure that where Marion is the great “sheep boss” has a few bum lambs for Marion to look after and our thoughts and prayers are with Chuck and the family.

Marion was my Aunt, one of three Sibley/Chambers sisters that made the world a better place and blessed the lives of those they loved. Marion and Chuck helped shape my life when they graciously gave me the opportunity to live and work on the Lucas Ranch for several Summers. There were many happy memories created at the Lucas Ranch and I will always love and miss Aunt Marion. My sincerest condolences to Chuck, Patty, and Debbie for their great loss. My sincerest apologies for not being there today with the Lucas Family because they were there for me. God Bless you Aunt Marion and Rest in Peace.
