On the evening of July 20, 2019, Pat passed away peacefully at Mountain View Medical Center after a hard-fought battle with Alzheimer’s. Pat was visited and comforted by family and friends leading up to his passing. Pat was 85 years old when he passed.
Pat was born on August 11, 1933 in White Sulphur Springs in Meagher County, Montana. He was the fifth of six children and the second son born to Mike T Bergan and Nola Pearl Travis Bergan.
Growing up in White Sulphur, Pat’s father was the sheriff and the family lived in the basement of the jail. Pat attended school in White Sulphur Springs up until two weeks before graduation when a “differing of opinions” led him to finish early. Pat met the love of his life June Edwards in White Sulphur Springs and the two were married on June 14, 1957. They had two children, Barry and Cheri.
Pat was hard working and always on the move. Soon after high school he began work on several local ranches, driving truck – logs, lumber, or his own cattle truck. Most notably he worked on the Galt Ranch for over 30 years, feeding cows, calving, fencing, shipping, branding and loving every minute of it.
Pat was known for his sparkling “Paul Newman Eyes,” his love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit. Pat loved the outdoors so much he occasionally brought it inside with him, having a pet coyote and fox at different times over the years. He had a long list of hobbies; snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, horseback riding, flying airplanes, rodeo, trapping, guns, and hunting just to name a few. Above all he most loved visiting with friends and family and “having a hootch or two.” He never spoke ill of anyone, but you didn’t want to cross that Irish temper. Pat will be remembered for his clever sayings, and would be happy to know we will “bend an elbow for him” and then “let the tail go with the hide.”
Pat is preceded in death by his parents, and five siblings, Mick, Nora, Pearlie, Eileen, and Collen. Pat leaves behind his wife June Bergan, children Barry (Nora) Bergan, Cheri (Wally) Bailey, grandchildren Annie Bailey, Aaron Bailey, Amy Bergan, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved very much.
A celebration of life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 25th at Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 103 E. Garfield, White Sulphur Springs. A reception will follow at the Montana Roadhouse. In lieu of flowers the family is encouraging donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, mailing address 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601 or the activity room at Mountain View Medical Center nursing home.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to The Galt family and crew for taking such good care of Pat over the years, and helping to keep him doing what he loved for so long. The family would also like to thank the staff at Mountain View Medical Center for their incredible kindness and care during Pat’s stay.
