Robert Eugene Campbell
Robert (Bob) Eugene Campbell, age 77, died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 15, 2015, after being thrown from a horse while on a trail ride in the Elkhorn Mountains.
Bob was born May 19, 1937 to Orville and Olive Campbell of Hysham, Montana. He graduated from Hysham High School in 1955. He farmed in Treasure County until the early 1970’s when he moved to Bozeman, Montana and was hired by the Gallatin County Sheriff office.
Bob served as a Gallatin County deputy for 21 years.
After retiring from the Sheriff’s office, Bob turned his love of horses, mules, and mountains into a successful business as a licensed back-country guide. Pack trips and riding in the high-country were among his greatest passions.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Olive Campbell. He is survived by his sister Barbara Coyle of Newport, Oregon; his brother Walter (Edna), of Wichita, Kansas; and his brother David Campbell (Judi), of Salem, Oregon. He is also survived by six children, Jane Campbell of Hillsboro, Oregon; Bill Campbell (Betty), of Beaverton, Oregon; Laura Campbell of Denver, Colorado; Anne Campbell of Seattle, Washington; and Mary Campbell (David Wells), of Ann Arbor, Michigan; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was loved by friends and family for his big heart, generosity, humor, and his wonderful gift for storytelling. He was an outspoken advocate for education and progressive thought.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, March 21st, at 1:30 pm at the Holiday Inn, 5 E Baxter Lane, Bozeman.
